This page here is made by the young people at York Travellers Trust.
The young people at York Travellers Trust on Thursdays do English and Maths, write stories and reports. We would like to put some of their stories and reports on here so that schools that would like stories about Travellers can come onto the website and read stories that are written by Travellers.

Reasons for this course by Chase

Can I take you on this journey for why I am doing this course?

The reason why I started this is to go to college. I am going to college for my future. I will be able to show people my qualifications to show that I am qualified to work as a roofer and own my own roofing company.

What is this course?

This course is called Functional Skills. Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills have the same values as GCSEs. We are working towards our Functional Skills in English and Maths.

What is the schedule?

The schedule is once a week, every Thursday, we go to YTT. We start at 10:30am and finish at 12:30pm. We do an hour of English and an hour of Maths.

Reasons you should do this course by Jimmy

1. This course is why I want to go because it is very helpful and gets the qualifications that you need for when you doing roofing or any other courses. This will be helpful when I am working because I will be able to show people my qualifications so I can have a good reputation.
2. The more qualifications I have the more skill sets I will have to help me develop my full potential, which helps me get more work and better range of my skills.
3. The more qualifications I have the more jobs I can have such as roofing, landscaping and block paving which in turn will get me more money and it will help my future and allow me to grow my business adventures.
4. It also helps you understand business more than other people because you have to learn to make profit and some times break even and you will also pick up on your writing.

How to make a pancake when you don't know how to make a pancake

At the start of the session, we were chatting about activities. We thought about making a cake, but it took too long. As it was the last week of half term and it was Pancake Day on Tuesday, we made pancakes. We had to talk to Abigail and get her to get the ingredients. The equipment used was a whisk, a bowl, a pan, a measuring jug, a spatula and a soup spoon. The ingredients were eggs, pancake mix and water. We mixed them together and cooked them in a frying pan.

When we cooked them, we put syrup on top. We made them for ourselves. We scored all the pancakes. The lowest score was 6.9 out of 10, it looked like scrambled egg. The best one was Michael-Peter’s pancake which was 10 out of 10. It was a perfect circle and was fluffy and thick. Millie’s was also a 10 out of 10 and shaped like a Tellytubby.

Halloween Party Report

On Tuesday 31st October 2023, between 1pm and 3pm, we painted nails, painted faces and applied body glitter for people who came to our Halloween party.

Millie charged £1.50 for adults and £1 for children to paint their nails. Demi charged 50p for body glitter and Michael-Peter charged £2 for an adult's face to be painted, £1 for a child's face to be painted and 50p for tattoos.

Millie earned £16.50 in profit and Michael-Peter and Demi earned £18 in profit together. Altogether, we made £34.50 in profit. We want to run the same businesses for the Christmas Party in December, if we can. We want to do it so we can earn money and go on a trip in 2024 as a treat, for all of our hard work in 2023.

UFC skyrocket to popularity by Jimmy

Where it all started.

Dana White started the UFC in November 1993. It was a new sport for entertainment and it was every single martial art form combined. It comprises of Brazilian Jujitsu, American Freestyle Wrestling, Greek Boxing and, from Thailand, Muay Thai.

UFC’s first global superstar.

The first superstar was a young man called Conner McGreggor, he was a 2 divisional champion in Cage Warriors. Dana signed him to a 3 fight deal which he won all 3. So he challenged Chad Mendes for the interim belt and won. He went on to knock out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds and this boosted his popularity. Then he lost a close fight with Nate Dais and then rematched him and beat him in dominant fashion. Then he fought Eddie Alvares to become a double champ and he was the first megastar .

How they make every fight happen.

Because UFC is its own company, they can make all the big fights  happen. This is unlike boxing. They are able to cherry pick all their opponents such as Fury vs Usek.

How stars are made.

UFC sign the best of the best.  They can fight each other and UFC can promote these fights without having the costs of external fights. Because they fight more and are less likely to pull out of these fights, this boosts fighters likeability which has a big impact on their earnings. More frequent big name fights mean it’s easier to ask for a title shot in order to claim the belt. This gives them the opportunity to become superstars when they win.

The current state of boxing by Chase

Current big names in mainstream boxing

The big money fighters in boxing are Tyson Fury, Canelo Alvarez and Alexander Usyk. Recently, there has been a deal signed for Tyson Fury and Usyk to fight for the title of undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Currently Tyson Fury is the two time undefeated WBO champion of the world and Usyk is undefeated WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO in the cruiserweight category, and also has WBA, IBF and IBO champion in the heavyweight category. The winner of this fight will be the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the world since Lennox Lewis in 2000. Canelo Alvarez, of Mexico has won multiple world championships in various weight categories. His professional record is 64 fights with 60 wins, 39 of these were knockout. He had two losses and two draws. Some of his big name fights, he had a trilogy with Triple G, he had a big fight with Billy-Joe Saunders in which he broke his skull.

Influencer boxing – and the impact

Influencer boxing has saved the sport. Misfit is setting up events which are bringing different communities together: the Youtubers, UFC, and NBA. The main fighters are including Jake Paul, KSI, Logan Paul and Francis Ngannou. Jake Paul, in my opinion, is the best Influencer boxer because he has fought professional boxer Tommy Fury, and so did KSI but he outed in a better performance. His most recent fight was against Nate Diaz which he won. Francis Ngannou, who fought the heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury which ended in a 1 point decision for the win to Tyson Fury . Influencer boxing has brought life and a new audience to boxing.

Boxing – more about money

It is not much about the better boxers any more,  it is more about making money. An example of this is Canelo Alvarez and Triple G Part I. Canelo Alvarez was set to face Triple G in an undisputed middleweight championship bout which ended in a controversial decision where Triple G won the fight in the people’s eyes but it was declared a draw by the judges in order to set up Part II to make more money from it. For Part II the new contract had a rematch clause creating a trilogy. III Canelo Alvarez won both of those fights. Another example of this is the Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, in Part I Tyson Fury was winning most rounds and then we got to the famous Round 12, also known as the Resurrection Round. In this round, Tyson Fury got hit by Deontay’s famous backhand which knocked him out. He fell to the canvas and was knocked out for a good 4 seconds and then following this he got up as though nothing had happened and then the bell rang for the end of the fight. The fight was called a draw even though most people felt Fury had won. The following two fights Fury won both by TKO.

Future of boxing

The next generation of boxers include Moses Itauma, Dennis Mccann and Hopey Price. Moses is a 18 year old which he is trying to beat Mike Tyson’s record of youngest world heavyweight champion. His record is 6 fights with 4 knockouts, his last 2 fights were knockouts in the 1st round. Dennis Mccann, aka Dennis the Menace or the Haribo Kid, is a bantam weight fighter. He is 22 years old and has been skyrocketed to the big fights too soon. He headlined a show in 2023 and drew. His total fight record is 15 fights, 14 wins and 1 draw. In my opinion, if he had a few more years in the lower cards and then get moved up to the main event then he could win world titles. Hopey Price, aka Drago, is 23 years old, he has previously fought in bantam weight and now he is fighting in feather weight. He fought in a fight deal, which meant if he won (which he did) his next fight would be for the British title. This will be his next fight, his record is currently perfect with 12 fights and wins, 5 were by TKO. These are only a few of the names of the future, but there will be a lot more to come and a lot more to go.
